Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in Heriot-Watt University’s Model United Nations (MUN) conference, and the experience was nothing short of transformative. As a delegate representing France in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), I had the chance to step into the shoes of a diplomat, tackling one of the world’s most pressing issues. I’m deeply grateful to Demont Institute for providing this opportunity and fostering a culture of global engagement among students.
The MUN experience was a whirlwind of preparation, strategy, and dynamic debate. As France’s delegate, my task was to represent the country’s stance on the issue of International Sanctions and Territorial Integrity. This meant immersing myself in French foreign policy, understanding the complexities of the topic, and crafting strong arguments to present before the committee. The support and resources provided by Demont played a pivotal role in my preparation, ensuring I was ready to navigate the intricacies of MUN with confidence.
What truly stood out to me, however, was the opportunity to collaborate with students from all over the world. The heart of MUN lies in negotiation and diplomacy, as delegates work together to form alliances and build consensus. This process not only sharpened my research and critical thinking skills but also deepened my appreciation for the nuances of international diplomacy and multilateral cooperation in addressing global challenges.
One of the most enlightening aspects of MUN was witnessing the wide range of perspectives that delegates brought to the table. It was a powerful reminder of the complexity of international relations and the importance of empathy and understanding in finding solutions to disagreements. Despite moments of contention, the respectful and cooperative atmosphere of MUN allowed for meaningful discussions and constructive dialogue.
This experience has sparked a strong passion for global affairs and diplomacy within me. I am eager to continue exploring these areas, engaging in discussions, and contributing to solutions for international issues. I hope Demont continues to offer opportunities like MUN, as they equip students with valuable skills, a global perspective, and the confidence to pursue their ambitions on the world stage. Who knows—perhaps one day we’ll find ourselves representing our nations in the real-world arena of diplomacy!
